BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Ashley Meier of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team just recently returned from Carson, Calif., as the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team began its new World Cup cycle with its first training camp that was held on Feb. 2-9 at the Home Depot Center. The midfielder will now plan to head to Spain March 1-12 for the next training camp to prepare for the 2014 World Cup in Canada.

The first camp saw a group of 24 players who were brought in to help shape the core of the U-20 National Team. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. U.S. Soccer Women’s Technical Director April Heinrichs called up 24 players for the camp.

The team concluded its camp with a 3-2 defeat over UCLA last Friday. Meier was one of the starting XI, along with conference foes Summer Green of North Carolina and Virginia’s McKenzy Doniak.

More information will be released prior to the second training trip to Spain in the next couple weeks, including full roster and schedule. Be sure to check back on HokieSports.com for Meier’s blog throughout her trip overseas.
