BLACKSBURG, Va. – Coming off her first trip to the NCAA Tournament, freshman Ashley Meier of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team has received national attention Wednesday by earning a place on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman Team of the Season. The Strongsville, Ohio, product was selected as a Second Team midfielder.
This is her third postseason award, as she was placed on the All-ACC Second Team and All-Freshman Team for just the second time a freshman earned both honors for the Hokies since Tech joined the ACC in 2004.
The midfielder finished the season leading the Hokies in goals and points. Meier found the back of the net eight times, including two game-winners, and her three assists put her atop of the squad with 19 points. She played huge roles in the wins over then-No. 7 Wake Forest and then-No. 18 Maryland, playing 79 minutes to help shutout the Demon Deacons and assisted the game-winner against the Terps. Meier finished the season with goals against three nationally ranked opponents.
Five other ACC foes garnered TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman Team of the Season honors, including Rookie of the Year Cassie Pecht of Duke, North Carolina’s Summer Green (First Team) and Hanna Gardner (Second Team), Virginia’s Makenzy Doniak (First Team) and Boston College’s McKenzie Meehan (Second Team).
