BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 22 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell to the No. 14 Virginia Cavaliers, 5-0, Sunday evening in its final regular season home contest at Thompson Field. Virginia’s Caroline Miller led the Cavaliers with her second-career hat trick, as she scored the first three goals of the game.

Tech fell to 12-5-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the ACC, while Virginia improved to 12-4-1 and 5-3-1 in the conference.

Tech attacked early getting the first corner two minutes into the game. Jazmine Reeves jumps up and sends a header on goal but the Cavalier keeper, Danielle DeLisle, was there to make the first save of the game.

The first goal came at the 28:43 mark, when Miller was fed the ball in the box from Danielle Colaprico and fired a shot past the Tech goalie, Dayle Colpitts. The Hokies responded with a corner and shot by senior Amanda Gerhard but DeLisle was there to pick up the save.

Tech’s closest opportunity to put a point on the board came at the 32:00 mark when Ashley Manning took the ball from DeLisle and had an open goal in front of her. The junior fired a shot that just hit the post and the ball rolled out of bounds.

The two teams headed into the break with the Cavaliers up 1-0. Virginia outshot Tech, 9-4, and held the 4-3 corner kick advantage.

The Hokies adjusted in the second half, moving attackers up front to try and tie the score, but the Cavaliers took control.

Miller continued attacking and notched the second goal of the game in the 66^th minute. The senior got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box from Morgan Brian and fired one to the inside post to make it a 2-0 ball game.

The Hokies responded with two unanswered opportunities with the first shot coming from Danielle King, but goes just over the goal at the 66:12 mark. Ashley Meier tried to connect four minutes later but DeLisle was there to keep the score at 2-0.

King fired another Hokie shot in the 72^nd minute but DeLisle was there to make her fourth save of the game.

A minute later, Miller finalized the hat trick from a Makenzy Doniak cross and took a wide open shot in the box past Colpitts to give the Cavaliers the 3-0 lead at the 73:38 mark.

The two teams traded shots before the Virginia capitalized again in the 75^th minute when Miller found Gloria Douglas about eight yards out. Douglas fired and Colpitts couldn’t made the grab and deflected it into the net.

Down 4-0, Tech continued to fight grabbing two corner kicks, but the Cavalier defense remained strong to keep the Hokies at zero.

Shasta Fisher connected on the final goal of the game at the 83:26 mark. Virginia was rewarded a corner after Morgan Brian fired a hard shot on goal and Colpitts deflected it out for her final save of the night. Fisher found the loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and sent one to the upper right corner to finalize the 5-0 score.

The Cavaliers closed the game out, outshooting the Hokies 24-9 and took the 8-5 corner advantage. Miller led both teams with three goals off of six shots and an assist. Jazmine Reeves led the Hokies with three shots and one on goal.

DeLisle (8-3-1) recorded the win for Virginia and picked up four saves. Colpitts took the loss and fell to 7-5-1 on the season, while recording five saves for the Hokies.

Tech returns to action Wednesday when it travels to No. 13 Wake Forest for the final game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Hokies are in need of the win to secure a spot in the eight-team ACC Tournament that starts next Sunday.
