Historic Riggs Field - 377 Box Score

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 22 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team cruised past the Clemson Tigers, 3-0, Thursday night at the historic Riggs Field. Ashley Meier, Jordan Coburn and Ashley Manning connected on the Hokie goals.

Tech improved to 12-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the ACC, while the Tigers fell 5-10-2 and 0-9-0 in the conference.

The game started off with the Hokies attacking hard. Their first corner kick came five minutes into the game, but the Tiger defense was there to clear the ball out. Tech continued attacking with three unanswered shots before the first goal at the 11:20 mark.

Meier took the ball up the field and made moves past the defenders and took a shot that the Clemson keeper, Hunter Rittgers, blocked. Katie Yensen flew in to try and connect but Rittgers was there again but couldn’t grab it. Meier was there to connect on the goal about 12 yards out.

The first half ended with Clemson’s third shot of the game at the 43:35 mark and the Hokie keeper Dayle Colpitts picked up her second save of the night. The two teams went into the break with Tech up 1-0.

Tech took the 8-3 shot advantage in the first half, while taking two corners. Clemson’s Rittgers picked up three saves.

The Hokies continued with the momentum in the second, taking another corner just two minutes in but the ball was cleared. Meier set up the second corner of the half off her fifth shot of the game, which was deflected out.

The corner kick taken by Kelsey Loupee at the 51:43 mark was cleared by the Tigers. But the ball found Coburn at the top of the 18-yard box and the freshman fired one past the new Clemson keeper, Morgan Hert, to go up 2-0.

With just under 20 minutes to go, the Hokies increase the dominant lead to three. Meier took the ball down the left sideline and perfectly placed the ball in the 18-yard box and Manning flicked it to the top left corner for her third goal of the season.

Up 3-0 with 16 minutes remaining, Caroline Kelly entered the game for the first time in 11 contests as she replaced Colpitts in goal. The freshman received action quickly and stopped a Clemson shot at the 75:52 mark to pick up her first save of the night.

The Hokies closed the game out, outshooting the Tigers 13-7 and took the 4-2 corner advantage. Meier led both teams with five shots with two goal and three points.

Colpitts recorded the win for the Hokies as she moved to 7-4-1 on the season and picked up two saves. Kelly picked up the final two saves for the Hokies. Rittgers took the loss and moved to 5-8-2 overall and stopped three shots.

Tech returns to Blacksburg for its final home contest of the season Sunday against in-state rival Virginia at 5 p.m. Prior to kickoff the Hokie staff will honor its senior class for their dedication to the program.
