No. 9 Hokies set for NC State Sunday

• The No. 9 Virgina Tech women’s soccer team opens conference play at Thompson Field Sunday at 1 p.m. against the NC State Wolfpack

THE SERIES

• This marks the 11th meeting between the two teams and Virginia Tech leads 6-4

• The series dates back to 1998 when the Wolfpack won 4-1

• Virginia Tech has won the last five meetings against NC State

LAST TIME OUT

• The Hokies swept the Wake Forest Invitational this past weekend

• Friday, Shannon Mayrose connected on an early first half goal to lift the Hokies past Illinois 1-0

• Then closed the weekend with a 2-0 win over Massachusetts Sunday morning

• Three Hokies were selected to the 2012 Wake Forest Invitational All-Tournament team

• Junior Dayle Colpitts was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week Monday, Sept. 10

• The goalkeeper played every minute this past weekend and notched her third-straight shutout

• She charted six saves in the pair of wins for the Hokies

WAKE FOREST ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

• Three Hokies were selected to the 2012 Wake Forest Invitational All-Tournament team

• Shannon Mayrose was honored for her game winner against Illinois

• Freshman Ashley Meier found the back of the net against Massachusetts and fired four shots to earn the honor

• Team captain and defensive leader Kelsey Mitchell led a defense that only allowed 5.5 shots per game to get placed on the squad

MAKING HISTORY

• The 2-0 win over Massachusetts goes down in the Virginia Tech Women’s Soccer Record Book

• The win marked Tech’s eighth consecutive win which is the most in women’s soccer history

• It also set a new record for the best season start for the Hokies

MOVING ON UP

• The Hokies are ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA Continental Tire poll this week

• This marks the highest ranking in program history

• This is the first time in program history the Hokies have broke the top 10

• No. 9 is the highest ranking among Virginia Tech sports this week (football is No. 13)

BIRTHDAY PK

• Shannon Mayrose successfully connected on a penalty kick for the final goal of the game againt American

• What a great way to celebrate her 21st birthday!

CONHEENEY MISSES FOR FIRST TIME

• Senior Kelly Conheeney was forced to sit out during week two due to concussion symptoms

• The midfielder had played and started in every game in her career before Virginia Tech faced Mount St. Mary’s and American

• She will sit out this upcoming weekend against NC State

NEW BEGINNINGS

• The Hokies are facing five teams this season that have never faced Virginia Tech in women’s soccer

• The Hokies will meet UNC Wilmington, Iowa State, Mount St. Mary’s, Illinois and Oklahoma this season

• The Hokies have defeated every newcomer so far this season and will meet Oklahoma Oct. 7

MOVING INTO SEPTEMBER

• The Hokies are 81-71-8 all-time in the month of September

• Virginia Tech has outscored its opponents 279-245 in those games

• The Hokies are 43-46-3 on the road and 38-25-5 at home in the month of September
