WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 11 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight with a 2-0 shutout over Massachusetts Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. Jazmine Reeves and Ashley Meier connected on goals to improve the Hokies to 8-0-0 on the season, while the Minutewomen fell to 2-4-0.

“Today was a good match for us,” commented second-year head coach Chugger Adair. “We played pretty consistent and solid from start to finish. I think breaking down UMass was very difficult. They played a defensive style and to get that first goal was important. It took a little bit longer than I would have liked, scoring later in the game, but it was a good goal to open the game up.”

Tech came out strong in the first but was unable to find the back of the net. The Hokies controlled the tempo the whole first 45-minutes, as they took 11 shots and five corner kicks. UMass struggled to find an opportunity and went into the break with three saves.

The Hokies fired five shots before Reeves connected on the first goal of the game at the 69:45 mark. The Minutewomen’s goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon misplayed the ball and Reeves was there to make the finish close in the box.

A minute before the goal, UMass had its first opportunity of the game but Dayle Colpitts was there to make the stop for the Hokies.

The final goal came in the 85^th minute when Meier connected on a Katie Yensen cross 10-yards out for her third goal of the season. The Minutewomen had three final chances to find the back of the net in the last 10 minutes of regulation, but were unable to connect.

Tech outshot UMass 24-4 and took seven corner kicks. Ashley Manning led both teams with five shots, while Meier followed with four.

Colpitts charted the win for the Hokies, as she played all 90 minutes and made three saves. Stephanie Gordon took the loss for the Minutewomen and recorded five saves.

“It was a good result and we are happy to get through the weekend with two wins. We have things to work on this week as we move forward and open up ACC play with NC State on Sunday,” noted Adair.

For their efforts throughout the whole weekend, Shannon Mayrose, Kelsey Mitchell and Ashley Meier were named to the Wake Forest Invitational All-Tournament Team. The complete team is listed below.

The Hokies return to Blacksburg and will enjoy a seven day break before the ACC opener against NC State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
