WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 11 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team kicked off the Wake Forest Tournament with a 1-0 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini Friday night at Spry Stadium. Shannon Mayrose connected on the goal as Tech remains undefeated.

The Hokies improved to 7-0-0 on the season, while Illinois fell to 3-2-1. Tech’s seven wins mark the best season start in program history, as well as matching its most consecutive wins which came in 2009.

“It was a good match for us today,” said second-year head coach Chugger Adair. “Illinois is a very good team and we knew they were going to test us today. We were able to control most of the tempo and it was good to get the early goal. I don’t think we were as sharp as we needed to be but I thought we played well and it was a good result in the end.”

Tech found the back of the net early at the eight minute mark to take the 1-0 lead in the first half. Mayrose connected on a deflected shot by Julia Goldsworthy off an Anne Lumpkin corner kick. The Fighting Illini had to three chances to tie the ball game, but junior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts was there to make the saves. The two teams went into the break with the Hokies up 1-0.

Tech closed out the half with five shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Illinois attacked hard matching the Hokies with five shots and three on goal.

The Hokies continued to attack in the second half, taking nine more shots but were unable to connect. Tech held the Fighting Illini to just two shots that weren’t on goal.

Tech outshot Illinois 14-7 and took nine corner kicks. Mayrose led both teams with six shots, while Ashley Manning followed with two.

Colpitts charted the win for the Hokies, as she played all 90 minutes of regulation and made three saves. Steph Panozzo took the loss for the Fighting Illini and recorded one save.

The Hokies return to action Sunday morning as they close the weekend with an 11:30 a.m. matchup against Massachusetts.
