WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 13 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team rolled past the American Eagles, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field to remain perfect on the season. Ashley Meier, Katie Yensen and Shannon Mayrose all connected on goals.

The Hokies improved to 6-0-0 on the season, while American fell to 1-4-1.

Tech found the back of the net in the 19th minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the first half. Meier had a breakaway down the right side of the field and fired a shot past the Eagle’s goalkeeper for the goal. Ashley Manning charted the assist and the two teams went into the break with the Hokies up 1-0.

Five minutes into the second half, Yensen sent a shot into the top left corner of the net to give Tech the 2-0 lead. Later in the 59th minute, the Hokies capitalized when Mayrose was rewarded penalty kick and charted the final goal of the game.

The Eagles had three opportunities to find the back of the net but only one was on goal and the Hokie keeper, Dayle Colpitts was there to make the stop.

Tech outshot the Eagles 21-3 and took eight corner kicks. Mayrose led both teams with five shots and three on goal, while Jazmine Reeves and Danielle King followed with three shots apiece.

Colpitts charted her first win of the season, as she recently returned to the states from spending the last couple weeks in Japan competing for Team Canada in the 2012 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Charlene Belanger took the loss and made six saves.

The Hokies return to action Friday as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Tournament. Tech will kickoff the tournament at 5 p.m. against Illinois.
