BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 13 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 4-0, Friday night at Thompson Field to remain undefeated. Katie Yensen, Katie DeTuro, Ashley Meier and Danielle King all connected on their first goals of the season.

The Hokies improved to 5-0-0 on the season, while the Mount fell to 1-2-0.

Tech came out hot in the first, as Yensen scored in the first four minutes of play. The sophomore midfielder headed in a cross from Ashley Manning to put Tech up 1-0.

At the 31:51 mark, Jazmine Reeves fired a hard shot that the Mount St. Mary’s goalkeeper, Vicky Cocozza, blocked and DeTuro was right there to knock the ball in to make it a 2-0 ball game. Just five minutes later, Anne Lumpkin took a corner and setup Meier perfectly for the header. Tech went into the break with a 3-0 lead.

The start of the second half was quiet as the Hokies found a few chances but were unable to connect. It was not until the 82:52 mark when King got the ball on the far sideline about 20-yards out and sent a floater over the Mount’s new goalie Rachel Bourne’s head for the final goal of the game.

Tech out shot Mount St. Mary’s 29-2 and took seven corner kicks. Shannon Mayrose led both teams with six shots with four on goal, while Reeves and Meier followed with four shots apiece.

Kelly charted the win for the Hokies, as the freshman goalkeeper played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves to remain undefeated. The Mount’s Cocozza took the loss, as she notched eight saves and fell to 0-2-0 on the season. Bourne replaced Cocozza at the half and recorded two saves.

The Hokies return to action Sunday as they travel to American for a 1 p.m. matchup.
