LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 16 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team shutout the Iowa State Cyclones, 1-0, Sunday to finish the Husker Classic at the Nebraska Soccer Field. Redshirt junior Shannon Mayrose found the back of the net in the 26^th minute.

The Hokies improved to a perfect 4-0-0 on the season, while the Cyclones were handed their first loss as they fell to 3-1-0 overall.

“It was a good result for us with a 1-0 win against Iowa State on the road today,” said second-year head coach Chugger Adair. “Anytime you get two wins on the road and get two results is a good thing. I think we controlled the match from start to finish and controlled the tempo and rhythm, basically all aspects of the match.”

The Hokies started the game off strong, taking the first four shots of the game in the first 20 minutes. Mayrose put Tech up early at the 25:51 mark with a header off a Anne Lumpkin cross. Iowa State tried to tie the score at one in the 44^th minute, but Caroline Kelly was there to make the save. The Hokies went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Mayrose closed the half with four of the five Tech shots, while Iowa State took one shot and two corner kicks.

The second half was quiet as the Hokies took four shots with one on goal and recorded five corner kicks. Tech defended well as Iowa State charted three shots, which were not on goal, and just one corner.

“It was a great goal that was scored by Mayrose. We created a lot of chances and I feel like we should have gotten another goal or two but we played hard and well. We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend,” noted Adair.

Tech closed the game with nine shots and six corner kicks, while the Cyclones took four shots and just three corners. Mayrose led both teams with five shots with two on goal.

Kelly recorded the shutout for the Hokies, as the freshman goalkeeper played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded one save. Iowa State’s Maddie Jobe notched two saves as she took the loss.

The Hokies will return to Thompson field Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Mount of Mount St. Mary’s.
