LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 16 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team rallied past Nebraska, 3-2, in overtime Friday night on the first day of the Husker Classic at the Nebraska Soccer Field. Junior Ashley Manning scored the final two goals to lift the Hokies to 3-0-0 on the season.

“Tonight was a very good game for us, playing Nebraska at its home field on a very rainy night,” said second-year head coach Chugger Adair. “We showed great character by going up 1-0, then down 2-1, and then coming back to tie it, 2-2, which shows a lot. We created a lot of chances and were able to convert three, which is very exciting for us. It was a great game and good night for us."

Both teams started the game off strong, trading shots in the first 10 minutes of play. Nebraska (0-3-0) found the first opportunity to put the first point on the board at the 6:54 mark, but freshman Caroline Kelly was there to make the stop in goal for the Hokies. Each team took five shots in the first, but was unable to convert. Tech ended the half with two shots on goal and seven corner kicks.

Six minutes into the second half, Jazmine Reeves sent a cross ball into the box and found Anne Lumpkin, who put the first point on the board at the 51:02 mark. Just three minutes later, the Huskers were awarded with a corner kick and Hannah Dittmar knocked in a blocked shot to tie the game in the 55^th minute.

At the 56:15 mark, Nebraska took a one-point lead when Mayme Conroy got past the Tech defense and fired a shot past Kelly. Tech took a shot and two corners before Manning took the ball up the field and scored from 15 yards out in the 71^st minute to eventually send the game into overtime.

Six minutes into the extra period, Reeves crossed the ball to Manning, who fired a hard shot that was blocked by the Nebraska goalkeeper but rolled in for the win.

Tech closed the game with 17 shots and 12 corner kicks, while the Huskers took 15 shots and just five corners. Manning led both teams with five shots with three on goal, while Kelly Conheeney followed with four.

Kelly charted the win for the Hokies, as the freshman goalkeeper played all 97 minutes and recorded five saves. Nebraska’s Emma Stevens notched four saves as she took the loss.

The Hokies will return to the Nebraska Soccer Field to take on the Iowa State Cyclones Sunday morning at 11:30 EDT.
