BLACKSBURG, Va. – Redshirt-junior Shannon Mayrose of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fired a header in the 102nd minute from freshman Morgan Conklin to lift the No. 22 Hokies over UNC Wilmington, 1-0, in double overtime Friday night to open the 2012 season on the first night of the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational. This is the fourth season in a row Tech has opened with a victory.
The Hokies (1-0-0) dominated the ball from the start as junior Ashley Manning took the first shot at the 1:10 mark, but UNCW’s goalkeeper, Caitlin Hunter, was there to make the save. In a seven-minute span, Mayrose fired the next three shots with her last one barely missing the goal as it hit the crossbar in the 11th minute.
The Seahawks (0-1-0) found their first opportunity on the goal in the 12th minute, but Tech’s freshman goalkeeper Caroline Kelly made a great save when she punched the ball over the goal to give UNCW a corner. UNCW found one more opportunity in the half at the 14:26 mark, but Kelly was there again to make the stop.
Tech saw three more chances in the half but could not find the back of the net as the two teams went into the break still tied at zero. The Hokies outshot the Seahawks 7-2 in the first and took two corner kicks.
Second-half play was more balanced as Tech outshot UNCW, 5-4. The Hokies found many opportunities but were not able to connect. Senior Kelly Conheeney recorded two shots in the half, while sophomore Danielle King and Mayrose each notched one apiece.
In the first overtime, the Hokies controlled the tempo taking all three shots and a corner, but Hunter remained solid in goal for the Seahawks to send it into the final extra period.
It wasn’t until Conklin sent a hard crossball into the box and Mayrose flew into the air and connected on the golden goal for the win at the 101:29 mark.
Tech outshot UNCW 16-6 and took seven corner kicks in the game, while the Seahawks only recorded two. Kelly notched the shutout for the Hokies as she remained in goal the whole night and charted four saves. Hunter stopped six shots for UNCW as she took its first loss.
Day two of the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational will kick off when Wake Forest and UNC Wilmington match up at noon on Sunday, before Tech takes the field at 2:30 p.m., to face Richmond at Thompson Field.
