BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer program has inked four signees for the upcoming 2012 season as announced by head coach Chugger Adair Friday morning. Leading the group is Ashley Meier, the 2011 NSCAA All-American High School National Player of the Year. Tech welcomes Meier, Courtney Stutts, Jordan Coburn and Caroline Kelly to the 2012 squad.

“We are definitely excited about our 2012 incoming class,” commented Adair. “I think these group of ladies are very strong. We look forward to releasing other student-athletes as we move forward into the year, but this is a great start to a very good incoming class. We are very excited, as all four ladies should bring a lot of talent to help us continue our growth as a team. With this class we are looking to build and continue the past success of the program and compete in the ACC and make another run in the NCAA Tournament.”

Ashley Meier

Midfield – 5-10

Strongsville, Ohio – Strongsville

US National Team / Cleveland Whitecaps

Meier, the 2011 NSCAA High School National Player of the Year, was a four-year letterwinner at Strongsville High School. She was a two-time high school All-American. Meier also received the Ohio’s “Ms. Soccer” and State of Ohio Player of the Year awards her senior year. She is also a two-time recipient of the Cleveland District’s Player of the Year, Sun Star News Player of the Year and Strongsville Post News Player of the Year awards. She has received all-conference honors all four years. Meier has been a member of the national team pools since she was 12 years old and is currently a member of the U18 US National Team. She also played for the Cleveland Whitecaps club team for six year, which were the State Cup Champions. Her sister, Alyssa, is a red-shirt sophomore defender at the University of Pittsburgh.

Adair on Meier:

“We are really excited for Ashley Meier attending Virginia Tech. With her pedigree and experience she is going to be able to make an impact right away and play somewhere in the spine for us in midfield, up top or even center back. She has a lot of versatility to her game and just the experience she brings as being the National Player of the Year and a current member of the National Team, her team and individual success and all of her different experiences with have a huge impact on our program.”

Courtney Stutts

Midfield – 5-10

Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte Country Day School

Charlotte Soccer Academy – ’93 Predators

Stutts, who enrolled at Virginia Tech in January, was a three-year letterwinner at the Charlotte Country Day School. She is a two-time NC Soccer Coaches Association and Charlotte Observer Public/Private All-State selection. She was placed on the NCISAA All-State, All-Region and All-Conference squads her junior year. She was the winner of the CCDS Coaches MVP Award as a sophomore and junior. In 2010, her squad was a NCISAA AAA State finalist. Stutts is a member of the ’93 Predators club team, where her U-16, U-14 and U-13 squads were North Carolina State Champions. She was a member of the ’93 NC ODP team from 2007-2009. In 2008 and 2009, she was the ’93 NC ODP team captain and went to the Region III Championships in New Orleans, La. She attended the Super Y National Camp in 2008. She is also a three-year letterwinner in basketball at Charlotte Country Day School.

Adair on Stutts:

“We are extremely pleased that Courtney has signed with us. She is attending school here in the spring, which shows her commitment to the game and her eagerness to make an impact to our program. She is very mature, strong and focused, which is going to help her solidify her midfield/center back position and create more opportunities to impact us in the fall.”

Jordan Coburn

Forward/Defender – 5-8

Ellicott City, Md. – Centennial

Bethesda Freedom 94/95 ECNL

Entering her senior season this spring, Coburn is a three-year letterwinner at Centennial High School. She was named 2011 Howard County Player of the Year and was placed on the 2011 Maryland All-State first team, All-Washington D.C. Metro team and All-Baltimore Metro team. During her sophomore season, she earned Howard County first team and Maryland All-State honorable mention honors. Coburn played for the Bethesda Freedom 94/95 ECNL club team for five years, where they were Maryland State Cup Champions in 2008, 2009 and 2011. In the spring of 2011, her team was a USYSA Region 1 Premier League semi-finalist. She was also a member of the 2009 ODP Regional Team and made the ODP Denmark and Sweden trips in 2008.

Adair on Coburn:

“Jordan is a center back from experience with her club team and her high school years. She is going to come in and compete and contribute to deepen our position at center back, but also with the possibility of playing left back. She is very versatile, athletic and smart kid. We look forward to her impact and making us better along the backline.”

Caroline Kelly

Goalkeeper – 5-9

Alexandria, Va. – West Potomac

Lee Mount Vernon Soccer Club

Kelly is entering her senior season in the spring and is a three-year letterwinner at West Potomac High School. She earned All-District second team her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. She was voted team MVP her junior season. Kelly has been a goalkeeper of the Lee Mount Vernon Soccer Club for the past seven years. In 2006 and 2011, her squads were the 8v8 Virginia State Cup Champions. She has captained the squad since 2006.

Adair on Kelly:

“Caroline is going to add some depth and strength to our goalkeeper position. I think her kicking game is very strong and she is comfortable with the ball at her feet, she can play off from the back and distribute very well. She has very good athleticism and very committed. We are looking forward for her to come in and push our goalkeepers and earn some minutes as she goes through her career.”
