BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Kelly Conheeney of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team was selected as one of the 13 Primetime Performers of the Week, as announced by CollegeSoccer360.com.
“Kelly had one of her best games of the year against West Virginia,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “She was definitely motivated and ready to play. In addition to scoring the only goal of the match, she provided our midfield with some relentless work that helped us to possess, attack and also limit the WVU attack. She proved once again why she is a leader of this team as she sets the standard and leads by example.”
Conheeney played a huge role in the Hokies 1-0 upset over No. 9 West Virginia in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The junior midfielder’s first-half goal advanced Tech to the second round of the NCAAs for the second time in program history. She tallied five shots and led both teams with three on goal against the Mountaineers. Conheeney leads the team with 11 goals this season and sits first in career game-winning goals with 13 in Tech’s all-time record books. Her game-winning goal Friday night placed her tied for first in the ACC with five game-winners this season.
Joining Conheeney with this honor is ACC opponent Caitlin Ball of North Carolina, along with forward Tiffany Cameron (Ohio State), defender Taylor Comeau (California), goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo (South Carolina), goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung (Portland), defender Ali Fenter (Washington State), forward Chelsea Hunter (Louisville), forward Stephanie Ochs (San Diego), forward Christabel Oduro (Kansas), forward Niki Read (Illinois) and midfielder Beth West of Texas A&M.
Long Beach State’s senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gustaves was named CollegeSoccer360.com’s Player of the Week.
In addition to CollegeSoccer360.com’s honor, Conheeney was named Virginia Tech’s Hardee’s Star of the Week for the second time this season.
Tech travels to Charlottesville, Va., Friday to take on Texas A&M at 4 p.m. on the University of Virginia’s campus for the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
