CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell to the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers, 4-0, in ACC action Thursday night at Klockner Stadium. The Hokies fell to 11-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference, while the Cavaliers improved to 12-3-1 on the season and 6-2-1 in the ACC.

“It was a challenging game tonight,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “I think we started a little slow and got caught in the moment of the game. Virginia took its chances early and got good goals. Dayle played great tonight in goal, despite giving up four; she really did a good job.”

Virginia came out strong in the first half, taking the first shot of the game two minutes in, but Tech’s keeper Dayle Colpitts was there to make the stop. The Hokies took the first corner kick of the game at the 5:41 mark and the strong Cavalier defense was there to flush the ball out of the box.

The Cavaliers continued to attack as Caroline Miller shot a high ball that ricocheted off the cross bar into the back of the goal over Colpitts’ head. Morgan Brian and Erica Hollenberg recorded the assists to help put the first point on the board at the 12:33 mark.

Tech started to come alive taking two shots on goal and a corner kick in the 27^th minute, but a foul on the Hokies rewarded Virginia with a free kick at the top of the box about 20 yards out. Julia Roberts fired a high ball over Colpitts’ head to make it a 2-0 lead at 30:42.

The Hokies recorded four more shots and a corner kick but was not enough to find the back of the net. The two teams would go into the intermission with the Cavaliers up 2-0.

Virginia took the shot advantage in the first half, taking seven to Tech’s six, while the Hokies recorded three corners.

The Cavaliers continued the momentum at the start of the second half, as Brian headed a goal off a long cross from Amanda Fancher and Julia Roberts to put Virginia up 3-0 at the 53:11 mark.

Seven minutes later, the Cavaliers connected on the last goal of the game, when Miller found the back of the net off a Hollenberg cross from 12 yards out.

The Hokies had four chances in the second, along with three corners to find the back of the net but was not enough. Despite allowing four goals, Colpitts recorded four saves in goal throughout the night. Virginia’s Chantel Jones recorded the win for the Cavaliers and tallied three saves.

“We played a lot better in the second half and just did not get the results we wanted. We were a little unlucky the first half. We created enough to get a goal, but like it has been for us we need to create more chances to score goals.”

The Cavaliers outshot the Hokies 13-10, while Tech out cornered the Cavaliers 6-2. Junior Kelly Conheeney led the Hokies with three shots on the night.

The Hokies return home Sunday to take on No. 8 North Carolina at 1 p.m.
