BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team captured its first conference victory in a 2-1 win over Miami Friday night at Thompson Field. Jazmine Reeves and Shannon Mayrose connected on goals for the Hokies, including a header by Mayrose in the last minute to secure the win.

“The girls played well,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “We played hard tonight and in the end we got the result that we needed. I thought that both teams created a lot of chances, but we produced enough to get the win and that’s great for us. The game was very energetic and kind of a must-win game for both teams for the overall standings. This is a big win for us and was a well-deserved win for the girls.”

Tech (9-4-1, 1-3-1 ACC) came out very aggressive in the first half, taking the first shot two minutes into the game, while Miami (7-5-1, 1-4-1 ACC) responded with a shot that went wide in the fifth minute. The Hurricanes had a chance to put the first point on the board, shooting a high ball that the Hokie keeper, Dayle Colpitts, punched over the goal to tally the big save for Tech at the 21:15 mark.

Kelly Conheeney responded five minutes later with a hard shot on goal that Vikki Alonzo had to make the diving save to keep the Hokies from taking the 1-0 lead. Tech would take two more shots and a corner kick before the two teams would go into the break still tied at zero. The Hokies took the shot advantage in the first, taking seven shots to Miami’s five.

The two teams continued the aggressive play at the start of the second half. The Hurricanes tallied the first shot at the 46:50 mark, while Colpitts recorded her second save of the night. Reeves took two shots on goal, before dribbling down the middle of the field causing Alonzo to come out of the box and juked the keeper to easily find the back of the net on the open goal at the 69:37 mark.

With the Hokies up 1-0, a yellow card was given to Kelsey Loupee and the Hurricanes were awarded with the free kick. Shannon Caspar connected on the loose ball in the box that slipped by Colpitts to tie the game at one apiece in the 70^th minute.

The Hokies took two more shots and a corner that wasn’t enough to get by Alonzo, as she tallied two saves. The game looked like it was going to go into overtime, before Amanda Gerhard lobbed a high ball into the box that Mayrose connected on as she headed the ball over Alonzo’s head to secure the win at the 89:05 mark.

Tech kept the shot advantage taking 16 total, while Miami took 10 shots in the second to tally 15 on the night. Reeves tallied four shots with four on goal. Conheeney followed with four shot that all went on frame. Colpitts recorded her fourth win of the season as she made five saves, while Alzono took her fifth loss of the season and she collected eight saves.

The Hokies will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 13 as they host Clemson at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
