DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell to the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils, 1-0, in ACC action Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Duke’s Kaitlyn Kerr headed in the game-winner at the 30:38 mark to secure the victory.

“We had another difficult game for us,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “Duke is No. 4 in the country and is a very good team, very athletic and well balanced. Our kids played well. We controlled most of the first half, as far as the rhythm and tempo and we deserved some chances and created some opportunities for goals. We didn’t get enough in the first half and in the end we gave up an unlucky goal. We tried to press and to change the game and just couldn’t get the tying goal. Duke is a good team and the girls worked hard. I feel for them a bit because they really worked hard, but just didn’t get the result at the end of the day.”

Both teams came out a bit slow, as Duke (12-1-1, 4-0-1) took the first shot, while the Hokie keeper, Dayle Colpitts recorded the first save four minutes into the game. Tech (8-4-1 0-3-1) fired two shots and recorded the first corner kick all in the 6^th minute. The Blue Devils started to pick up the momentum as they limited the Hokies to just one more shot in the half, that came at the 25:19 mark.

Duke recorded a corner kick and a shot that was blocked, before Kerr connected on a high ball that came from Kim DeCesare that was headed by Chelsea Canepa and landed at the feet of Kerr. The header brought Colpitts toward Canepa opening up the net for Kerr to give the Blue Devils the 1-0 advantage going into the break.

Duke took the shot advantage in the first taking six, while limiting Tech to four. Colpitts picked up three saves.

The Blue Devils’ defense continued to play very well, limiting the Hokies to just two shots in the second period that was not enough to find the back of the net. The first came at the 52:50 mark by Jazmine Reeves, who made a run down the middle and dribbled to the right and fired a shot that went wide toward the left side. Shannon Mayrose fired the last shot later on in the 65^th minute as she shot about 15 yards out from the middle of the field that ran wide.

Duke took eight shots in the second period to finish the game with 14, while Colpitts picked up three more saves to close out the game with six. Tara Campbell was in goal for the Blue Devils as she picked up the win and made two saves.

The Hokies will return to Thompson Field Friday to take on Miami for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
