WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with the No. 5 Wake Forest Deacons in ACC action Thursday night at Spry Stadium. Sophomore Dayle Colpitts earned a season-high 10 saves for the Hokies.

“The girls played very hard,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “It was a solid team effort throughout the whole match. They fought for everything they had and Wake Forest is a very good team and they are very dangerous. We started a bit slow and got things going midway through the first half. We became much better at possessing the ball and started to create chances. In the end, we grinded through the whole match and I am very proud of the girls for putting in such a tremendous team effort tonight to get the result that we did.”

Wake Forest (10-1-1, 3-0-1) came out strong taking three shots and two corner kicks in the first nine minutes of the half. The Deacons continued to attack as they would take the next two corners and a shot before Katie Cramp fired the first shot for Tech (8-3-1 0-2-1) as the Wake Forest keeper, Aubrey Bledsoe, notched the first save of the night at the 16:39 mark.

The momentum shifted throughout the half as the two teams continued to trade shots. The best scoring opportunity of the period came in the 31^st minute as Kelsey Loupee fired a low shot that appeared to be the first goal of the night but was deflected by the post. The two teams would go into the break with the score still 0-0.

Wake Forest took the shot advantage in the first, taking nine shots to Tech’s five. Sophomore Dayle Colpits recorded five saves for the Hokies.

The Deacons quickly had a chance to put the first point on the board seconds into the second half as Rachel Nuzzolese fired a hard shot but hit the far post. Wake Forest continued with the momentum taking a 7-1 shot advantage 13 minutes into the period.

In the 73^rd minute a foul on Tech awarded the Deacons a free kick right outside the right corner of the box where Colpitts remained perfect making her ninth save of the night, stopping a high lob from Wake Forest’s Kim Marshall.

Tech recorded its first corner kick of the half at the 88:22 mark. The Deacon defense quickly knocked the ball out of the box, but Katie Yenson was there to rebound and fired a shot that was blocked to reward the Hokies with another corner kick. The Wake Forest keeper caught Anne Lumpkin’s corner and the two teams would still remain scoreless to send the game into overtime.

Shannon Mayrose took the first shot in overtime for the Hokies and went wide. The Deacons reacted with a shot and three corner kicks in the next six minutes, but could not connect on anything. Both goalies saw limited action as the game would go into double overtime.

At the 102:16 mark, Tech’s Lumpkin went back to take a corner kick. Yenson looked to end the game but a Wake Forest defender blocked her shot. Four minutes later, Katie Stengel fired a shot but Colpitts was there to make the big save to keep the game going. The two teams battled to try to create chances but the time eventually ran out.

The Deacons are the first team to outshoot the Hokies this season as they took 23 to Tech’s nine. Colpitts (3-2-1) remained perfect on the night notching a season-high 10 saves, while Bledsoe (10-1-1) recorded three.

The Hokies remain on the road Sunday as they travel to No. 4 Duke for a 2 p.m. match up.
