COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell to the No. 6 Maryland Terps, 2-1, in its ACC-opener at Ludwig Field Sunday evening. Sophomore Jazmine Reeves connected on her second goal of the season for the Hokies, as Kelsey Loupee recorded the assist.

“It was an emotional, physical battle throughout the game,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “It was a game that could have gone either way and we had a good start to the first half and stuck to our game plan, as we went into the break with a 1-0 lead. We felt like we had a chance to win the game, but they connected on a nice header off a corner kick that we did not pick up well and clear the ball, which they punished us for that. I think we fought back and battled hard and had a number of chances in the end to tie the game but it didn’t fall our way. That’s how the games go in this conference unfortunately. Although, overall it was a good battle and the girls fought hard.”

The Terps attacked early in the first half, taking three shots in the first 10 minutes of the game. But the Hokies responded with a near goal off a the second corner kick of the game. After a corner kick and two shots, Loupee went back to take another corner. Reeves connected on the ball and shot it past the Maryland keeper, finishing it into the open net at the 28:44 mark. The two teams would go into the half with Tech up 1-0.

The Hokies had a chance to have a 2-0 advantage seven minutes into the second half as senior Katie Cramp took a header inside the box but gave it a little too much as the ball went over the goal.

The Terps responded three minutes later, as Olivia Wagner connected off a free kick from 24-yards out that went into the upper-left corner over Dayle Colpitts' head to tie the game at one at the 54:37 mark.

The two teams would trade corner kicks before Maryland would score the final goal of the game off a corner form Wagner as Cory Ryan headed it into the left side of the net past the Tech keeper at the 58:38 mark.

The Hokies tried to tied the game numerous times, taking six shots in the final 20 minutes of the game, including three corner kicks, but did not find the back of the net. Shannon Mayrose came so close as she took a header off a Anne Lumpkin corner that was deflected by the post.

Tech has not faced an opponent in the last three games to shoot in double-figures, as the Hokies out shot Maryland 11-7 and took six corner kicks, while limiting the Terps to just one.

In goal for the Hokies was Colpitts as she recorded two saves and allowed her first two goals of the season. Yewande Balogun recorded the win for Maryland, as she recorded three saves on the night.

The Hokies will return to Thompson Field Sunday, Sept. 25 as they face Boston College at noon.
