BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior defender Julia Goldsworthy recorded five points to lead the Virginia Tech women’s soccer squad to a blanking of High Point, 3-0 in its home opener Friday night at Thompson Field.

“The result was good ... we won 3-0 ... I think we controlled most of the game,” said first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “I don't think we were sharp enough in the first half. We controlled the tempo and there were a lot more shots and scoring opportunities, but we just weren't as sharp. They did a good job defending; they had a good game plan and we had to really work hard to get through that.”

The Hokie defense jumped out to a solid start by limiting the Panther offense to just one shot in the first half. Nine shots into the game, Tech put the first point on the board when Goldsworthy connected on a corner kick from Kelly Conheeney, connecting from 19-yards out to go into the half up 1-0.

At the 52^nd minute, Shannon Mayrose dribbled up the left sideline and placed the ball low into the net on a pass from Goldsworthy to record her second goal of the season. The final goal of the game came from Goldsworthy at the 69:22 mark as she took a long shot from 35-yards out, causing the High Point goalie to slip and the ball went right past her fingers to secure the game.

In goal for the Hokies was redshirt sophomore Anna Romeiser, who recorded three saves, including a phenominal save at the 29:49 mark as she back-peddled to catch a long shot and just kept the ball from crossing the line as she recorded her first shutout. High Point’s Andrea Ritchie took the loss, making eight saves for the Panthers.

“In the end, the result is good and we are just going to start getting ready for Elon on Sunday,” noted Adair.

Tech returns to Thompson Field on Sunday for a 6 p.m. matchup against non-conference opponent Elon.
