HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Hokie women's soccer squad defeated the James Madison Dukes, 3-1, on Sunday evening. Katie Yensen, Shannon Mayrose and Jazmine Reeves were the point-earners, for Tech. This is the second consecutive win for the Hokies (2-0) as they opened their 2011 season with a road win over UNC Greensboro Friday night.
“We are excited with the win; it was a great battle between the squads,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “Our girls just came out for the occasion and played well. It was a great game, both teams played well and hard. We created a lot of chances and they scored a goal early in the second half and our girls responded well. Overall this is a huge win for us in the first week.”
The Hokies’ offense pushed the ball from the start of the game as it recorded four shots in the first 15 minutes of play. Yensen, a freshman, had five chances by the 21:09 mark, before she connected on a ball that Amanda Gerhard sent into the box that Yenson shot from 12-yards out into the left corner of the goal 27 minutes into the game to put Tech on the board, 1-0.
Ten minutes later, junior Kelly Conheeney sent a free kick from middle of field into the box and Mayrose sprinted ahead of the Dukes' defense and beat the JMU goalkeeper Kate Courter with an 8-yard shot into the left corner to give the Hokies the 2-0 advantage at the end of the half.
After the break, the Dukes (0-1-1) responded with an early goal that was set up by Jessica Barndt, as she sent a long throw-in from the left side of the field and was headed into the far corner of the goal by Yolie Anderson-Golhor that put JMU on the board.
After Conheeney had a chance with a penalty kick that the Duke keeper saved, Reeves was setup by Conheeney at the 81:01 mark, when she sent a ball into the box from the left touchline and it deflected off a JMU player, where Reeves knocked the ball into the net from 10-yards out to secure the game for the Hokies.
Tech just out-shot JMU by only four shots as the Hokies tallied 15, while the Dukes charted 11. The Hokies started sophomore Dayle Colpitts in the goal, but left the game after a collision with a JMU player 37:06 into the game. Anna Romeiser replaced Colpitts for the final 52:54 minutes and she recorded two saves for Tech. JMU’s redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Kate Courter made six saves.
Tech opens its home slate at Thompson Field on Friday, Aug. 26 as it takes on High Point for a 7 p.m. matchup.
