GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hokie women's soccer squad opened the 2011 season with a 4-0 road victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans Friday evening. Kelly Conheeney, Anne Lumpkin and freshman Kelsey Loupee were the point-earners, including two goals from Conheeney for Tech. This is the third year in a row that the Hokies have opened their season with a victory.
“It was a was a great win for us tonight,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “The team pulled together and did what they needed to do and had a solid performance. This is a great start to the season and we looked forward to preparing for James Madison on Sunday.”
The Hokies dominated the ball from the start of the game, outshooting the Spartans (0-1) 7-2 in the first 45 minutes. After a UNCG defender got a hand on a Hokie cross in the box, Tech was awarded a penalty kick. Conheeney buried it with no problem at the 43:05 mark to give the Hokies a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
After the half, the Hokies picked up right where they left off, attacking the goal. Freshman Katie Yensen had the first chance, firing the first two shots of the half, giving Conheeney a chance for a corner kick. Lumpkin connected on the loose ball in the box from Conheeney’s corner to make the score 2-0 two minutes into the period.
At the 57:24 mark, Lumpkin set Conheeney up for her second goal of the season as Conheeney fired from the right wing to give the Hokies the 3-0 advantage. Conheeney has scored a goal in every season opener in her career.
Making her first career start for the Hokies, Loupee secured the match with the final goal as she juked the keeper from eight yards back with 11 minutes to go.
Tech’s defense shined throughout the match holding the UNC Greensboro to just four shots, while the Hokies fired 19. Sophomore Jazmine Reeves along with Conheeney led the squad both recording four shots each.
Charting the win for the Hokies is sophomore Dayle Colpitts, as she tallied two saves to record her fifth career shutout. UNC Greensboro’s Kelsey Kearny made six saves.
Tech returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 21 when it travels to James Madison for a 7 p.m. matchup.
