NEWTON, Mass. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team handed No. 4 Boston College its second-straight loss, topping the Eagles 2-1 on the road. This was just the third loss of the season for the Eagles and Tech’s second defeat of a top 10 team in the past week. Junior Brittany Michels led the way for the Hokies with an assist and score of her own while Kristie Mewis was the goal-scorer for the Eagles.
The Hokies (8-5-0, 2-2-0 ACC) got out to an attacking start early in the first half and were able to break through in the 21st minute when Michels found the back of the net on a relay from senior Jennifer Harvey and freshman Jazmine Reeves. This was Michel’s first goal of the year.
Tech would go on to out-shoot the Eagles (9-3-1, 2-3-0 ACC) 4-1 after the goal and would take the 1-0 lead, along with the 8-5 shooting edge into the halftime break.
Despite the Hokies taking the first four shots of the second half, Mewis was able to even the game at one apiece just over five minutes into the new period. Mewis lifted the ball from 21 yards out, to the far post for the score and her eighth goal of the year.
Play would slow in the minutes following the goal until Tech counteracted the Eagles’ four shots with one of its own when freshman Ashley Manning regained the lead for the Hokies on a pass from Brittany Michels.
Late attempts by Boston College were unsuccessful as the Hokie defense remained strong and did not allow the Eagles to score again, though they finished the game outshooting the Hokies 16-12.
Freshman Dayle Colpitts was in net for the Hokies and made six saves on the day. Jillian Mastroianni was the keeper for the Eagles and she also finished the day with six saves.
Tech will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 14, playing host to Wake Forest at 7 p.m.
