BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team battled, but was unable to match No. 11 Virginia, dropping its conference opener 3-0 at Thompson Field. Three different Cavaliers scored, but Gloria Douglas led the offense off the bench with a goal and an assist in the match.

In their usual fashion, the Hokies (6-4-0, 0-1-0 ACC) began the game attacking and took an early corner kick and shot in attempts to set the tone for the match. The ball would stay mainly at midfield for much of the first half, as the evenly matched first 45 featured numerous attempts and equal possession by both teams.

In the 30^th minute, Douglas was able to capitalize and put the Cavaliers (7-1-1, 1-0-0 ACC) on the board first after receiving a pass from Colleen Flanagan and pushing the ball up the field herself, knocking it into the opposite side of the net. Virginia was able to take the slight edge into the half, only out-shooting Tech 6-4.

The Hokies began the second half much like they did the game, as they took three corners and two shots in the opening 10 minutes. In the 63^rd minute, junior Brittany Michels nearly tied things up when she powered a shot at the goal from just inside the 18’, but Virginia keeper, Chantel Jones was able to knock it down and make the save.

Just over a minute later, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 when Megan Lenczyk and Douglas quickly moved the ball to Sinead Farrelly, who made space for herself past the defender and put enough on the ball that even with contact from Tech’s keeper Dayle Colpitts, it was able to make it past the goal line for the score.

Virginia took another step towards victory in the 80^th minute when Lauren Alwine buried her third goal of the year after slipping it just under a diving Colpitts and into the right side of the net after finding the ball on a scramble.

Though Tech was out-shot 18-9 in the match, the team kept it close in every other category. Senior leader Marika Gray led all players with five shots in the game.

Colpitts finished the busy night with eight saves, while Jones made three for the Cavaliers.

The Hokies return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26 as they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on the top-ranked Tar Heels, whom Tech beat a year ago in the regular season, at 1 p.m.
