WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 23 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team split the weekend as they captured a victory over LSU, topping the Tigers, 1-0, in the final game of the ACC/SEC Challenge. The win snaps a three game losing streak for the Hokies. Freshman Katie DeTuro was the lone scorer in the game.

"This was a great win for our team today and it came at a super time," said head coach Kelly Cagle after the game. "Not only did we play well, we also played hard and we played for one another. The squad took a step forward in this game, in every sense of the word. I could not be more proud of its leadership today and I know this team will build on this result and the way it was achieved."

The match started out with back-and-forth play and neither team seeing an offensive opportunity before the ten-minute mark. Fouls would plague the Tigers (1-3-0) for the much of the half, which allowed the Hokies (3-3-0) to dominate possession and outshoot LSU 6-1 in the first 45 minutes.

The second half would begin no different from the start of the game, and LSU’s Addie Eggleston was issued a yellow card just four minutes into the new period for aggressive play. The Tigers received another yellow in the 61^st minute as the team continued to rack up fouls.

In the 67^th minute, Tech was able to break the scoreless tie when DeTuro headed in a free kick from sophomore Julia Goldsworthy from 22 yards out after another LSU penalty. The goal was the first of DeTuro’s career and the assist was Goldsworthy’s first of the season.

The Hokies held on to the 1-0 edge for the remainder of the game and finished the match outshooting the Tigers 12-3, including 5-1 on target.

Freshman Dayle Colpitts was forced to make just one save, while LSU’s Mo Isom made four saves in the game.

Tech will return to action next weekend as they host the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational. The weekend tournament will begin on Friday, Sept. 10 and the Hokies will take on Villanova at 7:30 p.m. in the second game of the day.
