ELON, N.C. – The No. 15 Hokies opened the 2010 season with a 2-1 road victory over the Elon Phoenix. Senior Kelsey Billups and sophomore Kelly Conheeney were the points-earners for Tech, each with a goal and an assist in the game. Brittany Hallberg scored Elon’s only goal after coming off the bench. This is the second year in a row that the Hokies have opened their season with a victory.

The Hokies (1-0) dominated the ball from the start of the game, outshooting the Phoenix (0-1) 7-0 in the first 45 minutes. Tech was able to find the back of the net in the 25th minute, when Conheeney fed Billups, who slipped the ball through two defenders and into the back of the net to give Tech the 1-0 lead heading into the break.

After the half, the Hokies again came out attacking as sophomore Julia Goldsworthy nearly had an opportunity on a Billups corner kick, four minutes into the new period. Billups would not quit and minutes later she was again able to break down the Elon defense and connect with Conheeney to return the favor from earlier in the match. Conheeney buried the pass for her first goal of the season and second-career opening day goal.

Tech continued to control the game after the score, but was unable to put another up on the board. The Hokies had numerous opportunities, as they outshot their opponent 5-2 in the half, also taking six corners in the game, while Elon didn’t not take any.

The Phoenix was finally able to break through the strong Hokie defense in the 82nd minute, when Hallberg was able to connect on a cross from Kimmie Krauss and Alanna Winsper.

Freshman Dayle Colpitts made her first-career start in net. Colpitts did not record a save in her first outing, though she faced only two shots. Kisten Haney was the keeper for the Phoenix and made five saves on the night.

Tech will return to action on Monday, August 23, at 5 p.m., as the team will host American in its home opener.
