* - Repeat honoree from 2008 – Five members of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team were named to the ACC All-Academic team, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Seniors Robin Chidester and Emily Jukich, along with junior Jennifer Harvey were all honored for the second year in a row while sophomore Brittany Michels and freshman Kelly Conheeney earned the accolade for the first time. North Carolina’s Whitney Engen was named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Va., native, played in all 24 games this season, making 14 starts. The senior finished the year with one goal and four assists, two of those coming in the team’s final two postseason games. Chidester also saw time in net during the beginning of the season, making two starts in five appearances and tallying 19 saves, one shutout and a 3-1 record.
native, saw time in 23 games, starting 15 in her final season. Jukich, who hold the all-time career records for points (61), goals (29) and multi-goal games (5) at Tech, scored four goals and assisted two during the 2009 season. Jukich assisted Julian Johnson’s game-winner against Clemson and later scored the game-winning goal against Miami at the end of the regular season. Jukich was also honored after the season as a CoSida Academic All-District III third team member for her play and work in the classroom. This was also the second time she garnered the honors.
Academic All-Distrist III honoree this year as she was named to the first team. The Roanoke, Va., native tripled her career goals this season as she entered the season with three and tallied nine through the 2009 season, including a hat trick against UNC Greensboro. Harvey also finished the season a perfect 5-5 on penalty kicks and was a VaSID All-State second team selection.
Virginia Beach, Va., was an integral part of the Hokie midfield and defense this season, helping the team tie the school shutout record (9) that was set in 2008. Michels assisted in blanking then-No.1 North Carolina at home, then-No. 10 Wake Forest during the ACC Tournament and Murray State during the NCAA Tournament. This is the first academic award for Michels.
best freshman campaigns Tech has ever seen as she finished the year tied for second on the team in scoring with nine goals to go along with three assists and four game-winners. The Ridgewood, N.J., native scored the teams’ first goal of the season against High Point and also came up big for the Hokies in the ACC Tournament, scoring the lone goal in overtime to give Tech the victory. Conheeney earned numerous postseason awards for her outstanding play in her collegiate debut, including ACC All-Freshman team, All-ACC Tournament team and Soccer America All-Freshman second team honors, while also being a VaSID All-State second team selection.
