GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior heavyweight Ty Walz has been named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week after defeating No. 11 Jared Johnson in No. 6 Virginia Tech’s 29-6 victory over No. 24 Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon at the Moss Arts Center.
Walz, who’s ranked No. 3 at heavyweight by Intermat, shares the weekly honor with Pitt’s Ryan Solomon. It’s the second-career ACC weekly award for Walz who also claimed Wrestler of the Week honors last season after winning a pair of matches against Iowa State’s Quean Smith and Michigan’s Adam Coon at the NWCA All-Star Classic.
With the score tied at 5-5 entering the third period, Walz used three takedowns to pick up the 13-7 decision, handing Johnson his first defeat of the season. It was Walz’s first dual of the season with the Hokies after he missed the season opener while wrestling for the second-consecutive year at the NWCA All-Star Classic in his hometown of Cleveland.
The Hokies are back in action this weekend as they travel to No. 22 Northern Iowa for a 1 p.m. match on Friday before facing No. 5 Missouri at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be streamed live on FloWrestling.com.
