Walz set for homecoming at the NWCA All-Star Classic

BLACKSBURG – Senior heavyweight Ty Walz will represent the Virginia Tech wrestling program for the second-consecutive year in the main event of the NWCA All-Star Classic held on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Walz’s hometown of Cleveland.

The event will be streamed live on TrackWrestling.com. Walz will be facing Wisconsin’s Connor Medbery, a 2015 All-American who took an Olympic redshirt season in 2015-16. Last year, Walz topped Michigan’s Adam Coon in the heavyweight bout by decision, 9-3.

“It's a pretty prestigious event and I'm glad I can represent Virginia Tech in it,” Walz said. “Going back home still seems pretty surreal, but it will be cool to compete in The Land in front of all my loved ones.”

Walz led the Virginia Tech wrestling team to its best ever fourth place finish at the 2016 NCAA National Championship after his best season at Tech. Walz compiled a 28-3 record in his third year, going 16-1 against dual competition while only missing one event. En route to his second All-America honors, Walz finished second at the ACC Championship behind a two-time national champion and earned his highest finish at Nationals, coming in fourth after a trip to the semifinals and a 4-2 record at the event.

The No. 4/6 Hokies return to the mat with their season opener tomorrow, Nov. 5, against Edinboro at 1 p.m. and VMI at 3 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
