GREENSBORO, N.C.—Virginia Tech sophomore Zack Zavatsky Tuesday was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after leading the 10th-ranked Hokies to a pair of dual match wins over 17th-ranked Pitt ad Edinboro and recording an upset of the nation’s No. 2-ranked wrestler in Vic Avery of Edinboro.
Zavatsky, from Latrobe, Pa., recorded a major decision with an 11-3 triumph over Pitt’s Zach Bruce in the Hokies’ 28-7 ACC win over the Panthers in Pittsburgh on Saturday. Then on Sunday, he led Tech’s 29-7 win at Edinboro with a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Avery.
Ranked 14th nationally before his two wins, Zavatsky moved up to No. 7 this week in the InterMat national rankings. Zavatsky is the third Hokie to win the award this season and it is the fourth time a Tech grappler has been honored, with Ty Walz winning the award twice and Solomon Chishko once.
He was chosen from a pool of nominees that also included Conner Hartmann of Duke, Evan Henderson of North Carolina and Sean Fausz of NC State.
All four wrestlers will be competing in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship which will be hosted by the University of Virginia on Sunday, March 6. The one-day tournament, which will take place at the John Paul Jones Arena Center in Charlottesville, Va., will begin at 11 a.m.
