GREENSBORO, N.C.—Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Solomon Chishko was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Wrestler of the Week this week after defeating Penn State’s Jimmy Gulibon, the nation’s No. 2 ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, in the Hokies dual match with the Nittany Lions last Sunday
Chishko’s honor is the second straight for the sixth-ranked Hokies, who also saw heavyweight Ty Walz win the initial ACC Wrestler of the Week Award on Nov. 10.
Stepping into the vacancy created by the graduation of three-time All-American Devin Carter, Chishko recorded one of the biggest upsets nationally of the young season with his 3-1 decision over Gulibon of Penn State. A native of Jeannette, Pa., Chishko is 2-0 on the year, having also defeated John Meeks, 3-1, of 13th-ranked Iowa State in the Hokies 32-3 win over the Cyclones.
Chishko was chosen over a pool of nominees that included Sean Fausz of NC State and Zach Nye of Virginia.
The 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship will be hosted by the University of Virginia on Sunday, March 8. The one-day tournament, which will take place at the John Paul Jones Arena Center in Charlottesville, Va., will begin at 11 a.m.
