ATLANTA, GA. - The Virginia Tech wrestling team got its 2015-16 season started on a positive note, as both wrestlers competing at the 2015 All-Star Classic brought home wins from Atlanta on Sunday.
Redshirt sophomore Zach Epperly started the night off with a 2-1 win at 174 pounds over Oklahoma State’s Kyle Crutchmer. After a scoreless first period, Crutchmer started the second period on bottom and scored the first point on an escape. Epperly tied the score at 1-1 with an escape of his own and took the lead in the third period when Crutchmer earned his second stall warning. Epperly rode the 2-1 lead to the end, notching the first win of the night for the Hokies.
Redshirt junior Ty Walz closed out the night against Michigan’s Adam Coon in the heavyweight division, marking the second time the pair faced each other. Walz jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a monster takedown in the first period and never relinquished, attacking through all three periods to a 9-3 win.
The Hokies will be in its first action of the year this Saturday afternoon, as the team hosts Iowa State at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Cassell Coliseum.
