Joey Dance named ACC Wrestler of the Week
Freshman earns first honor for college career
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Virginia Tech freshman Joey Dance (Christiansburg, Va.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Wednesday for his performance in winning three of four matches, including a win over 12th-ranked Corey Keener of Central Michigan, and leading Tech to team wins over 19th-ranked Chattanooga and 25th-ranked Oregon State in the NWCA National Duals.

Dance, ranked 20th nationally last week at 125 pounds posted a 3-1 record at the National Duals. He pinned Oregon State’s Pat Rollins in 5:38 to open the Duals as Tech claimed an 18-16 triumph. He then recorded a major decision over Chattanooga’s Byron Smith, 16-3, in the Hokies’ 22-17 win over the Mocs. Finally, he defeated the 12th-ranked Keener, 6-1, in Tech’s final meet in National Duals as the Hokies toppled Central Michigan, 22-15.

Dance’s only defeat of the week came against the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett, 7-2, in the Hokies’ loss to the 4th-ranked Big Red. Dance got the first takedown on Garrett in that match.

Dance improved to 20-7 overall and 17-5 in dual meets for Tech. The Hokies are ranked 16th nationally this week in the NWCA weekly poll.

In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Dance was chosen over strong performances from Maryland 149-pound senior Frank Goodwin (Gambrillis, Md.), North Carolina 133-pound freshman Troy Heilmann (South Plainfield, N.J.) and NC State 165-pound senior Nijel Jones (Asheville, N.C.).
