BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - Fresh off an appearance in the finals of the NWCA National Duals in Minneapolis, the Virginia Tech wrestling team was voted seventh in the final USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll. The Hokies finished 16-3, went 5-0 in ACC play, and won the Corvallis Regional of the National Duals to garner the spot.

The seventh-place finish marks the second time in three seasons the Hokies have finished in the top 10 of the national poll (Tech finished sixth in 2010-11). Virginia Tech has also finished in the top 25 each of the past five seasons, the first time in program history that has happened.

This season, the Hokies had eight wins over top-25 teams: Wisconsin, Virginia (twice), Edinboro (twice), Oklahoma (twice) and Oregon State when it was ranked ninth.

“Another top-10 ranking helps us achieve consistency and consistency is one of our main goals,” Tech head coach Kevin Dresser said. “We feel the dual meet portion of our sport is very important, but now we have to match that consistency as a dual meet team with some great individual performances at the ACC Championships and then at the NCAA Championships next month.”

Tech will have some time off before heading to College Park, Md., next weekend for the ACC Wrestling Championships on Saturday, March 9. There, the Hokies will look to qualify all 10 starters for the NCAA Championships, which are held March 21-23 in Des Moines, Iowa.
