GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland 184-pound junior Jimmy Sheptock and Virginia Tech 165-pound senior Pete Yates have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestlers of the Week after each posted wins over fellow Top-20 opponents in weekend action.
The 10th-ranked Sheptock won four of five matches at Penn State’s Nittany Lion Open, including a 2-1 record against three ranked opponents. The Northampton, Pa., native defeated 19th-ranked Alex Utley of North Carolina by an 8-3 score and blanked 13th-ranked Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers, 2-0 to reach the finals. Sheptock’s lone loss of the weekend came in the weight class finals, where he suffered an 11-4 loss to top-ranked Ed Ruth of Penn State, the 2012 national champion at 174 pounds. Sheptock is tied for the Maryland team lead in technical falls with three after posting a 17-0 victory over Navy’s Colton Vanthof. Sheptock is 4-1 this season vs. nationally ranked opponents.
The fourth-ranked Yates, the defending ACC champion at 165 and the reigning tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler, picked up two wins over top-15 opponents on the road. On Friday, a takedown in the second period bolstered the Conyers, Ga., senior to a 4-2 victory over No. 11 Tyler Wilps of 18th-ranked Pittsburgh. On Sunday, Yates controlled the action with several early takedowns en route to an easy 8-1 win over No. 13 Johnny Greisheimer of 20th-ranked Edinboro. Yates now has 107 career wins, the fifth-most in school history and 51 career dual meet wins, tied for the sixth-most in program history.
