BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser Wednesday announced that transfer student-athlete Derrick Borlie has been admitted to Virginia Tech and will join the Hokie wrestling squad immediately.
Borlie, who is from Winchester, Va., signed with the University of Wisconsin out of high school and went to school there for two years before leaving Madison following his redshirt freshman season. He took a break from collegiate competition last year, but wrestled unattached. He suffered a season-ending knee injury early on in the season at the Hokie Open while wrestling unattached.
“We are extremely excited to have Derrick in the program,” associate head coach Tony Robie said. “He is a guy that we recruited hard out of high school when he was among the top recruits in the nation from Millbrook High in Winchester. He wrestles with an in-your-face style that we have tried to promote within our program and is a guy that will add a lot in terms of toughness and work ethic too our environment. He is the favorite to be the guy at 197 pounds for us and is someone we believe will have success at the national level. I look forward to working with him.”
As a redshirt freshman, he went 21-8 overall (24-8 when including unattached results in open tournaments) at 197 pounds for the University of Wisconsin. He won the UW Stevens Point Open, went 3-3 at the Kaufman Brand Open, 3-2 at the Cliff Keen Invite and 2-2 at the Midlands Championships. He won all four bouts at the NWCA National Duals, including a major decision victory over No. 19 Daniel Mitchell of American and went 5-1 in dual meets. His redshirt year, he won the FILA Junior Nationals at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. in freestyle.
At Millbrook High, he was a two-time state champion and four-time state qualifier, winning 102-straight matches to end his high school career. He finished high school with 124 pins and didn’t give up a single offensive point his senior year.
Borlie will be a redshirt junior for the Hokies and will wrestle at 197 pounds.
