CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The brackets and seeds for Saturday’s ACC Wrestling Championships were released late Friday night by the conference with four Virginia Tech wrestlers grabbing top seeds, the most among the six schools.
Jarrod Garnett (125), Devin Carter (133), Jesse Dong (157) and David Marone (HWT) all grabbed the top spot at their respective weight class to lead the way. Six Hokies received first-round byes while four will have to battle in Saturday’s 11 a.m. session.
Chris Diaz has the toughest matchup for a Tech wrestler in the first round as the No. 2 seed at 141 pounds will have to take on fifth-seeded Nick Nelson of Virginia in the first round. Nelson wrestled only the last few weeks due to injury.
Garnett, Carter, Brian Stephens (#2 seed at 149 pounds), Matt Epperly (#4 seed at 174 pounds), Chris Penny (#4 seed at 197 pounds) and Marone all picked up first-round byes.
Besides Diaz, Jesse Dong (#1 seed at 157 pounds), Pete Yates (#2 seed at 165 pounds) and John Dickson (184 pounds) will battle in the first round. Dong faces No. 6 seed Ryan Harding of Duke. Yates takes on #5 seed Willy Mello of Duke while Dickson takes on No. 2 seed Antonio Giorgio of UNC, a guy he pinned in the dual meet.
Action begins Saturday at 11 a.m. inside UVa’s John Paul Jones Arena. The semifinals begin at approximately 1 o’clock.
