Tech heads to Chapel Hill for ACC Challenge
Big task looms with No. 4 Wisconsin

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech wrestling team will head to Chapel Hill, N.C., this weekend for a trio of matches at the ACC Challenge inside the Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Tech and UNC will represent the ACC while UNC Greensboro, Wisconsin and Chattanooga will be the opponents this year.

The Hokies will have a tall task in the opener as they will take on No. 4 Wisconsin at 11 a.m. The feature bout will come at 133 pounds as Tech freshman Devin Carter, ranked eighth, will take on third-ranked Tyler Graff. Three other matches will feature two top-20 wrestlers. At 149 pounds, Tech’s Brian Stephens is ranked 19th and will take on No. 16 Cole Schmitt and at 184 pounds, No. 11 Tommy Spellman of Tech will battle No. 12 Travis Rutt. At heavyweight, David Marone is ranked 16th while Wisconsin’s Eric Bugenhagen is ranked 14th. The Hokies have guys also ranked at 125, 141 and 157 pounds while the Badgers have wrestlers also ranked at 165, 174 and 197 pounds.

At 1 o’clock, Tech will face UNC Greensboro and will finish up with Chattanooga at 3 p.m. Chattanooga features No. 6 Cody Cleveland at 141 pounds and Jason McCroskey is 15th at 184 pounds. Greensboro’s Ivan Lopouchanski is ranked 17th at 149 pounds and Andrew Saunders is ranked 16th at 184 pounds.

Spellman will have to be on his game as he is slated to face No. 12, No. 15 and No. 16 on Sunday.
