BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department, along with head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser, announced Thursday the Hokies’ schedule for the 2010-11 season, which features a rugged slate of non-conference matches, a prestigious event, and the always-tough ACC opponents.
The Hokies will open up in grand fashion as they will take on national power Iowa State on Nov. 6 at the Salem Civic Center before hosting the Hokie Open the next day.
Tech will participate in the Hershey Duals against Edinboro, The Citadel and George Mason on Nov. 13 before traveling to Chapel Hill for the ACC Challenge on Nov. 21. There, the Hokies will take on UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga and Wisconsin.
In December, individuals will participate in the Las Vegas Invitational and then Tech will open 2011 with a dual meet against Campbell and Appalachian State on the road. On Jan. 8 and 9, Tech will take part in the exclusive NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It will be the first time the Hokies have been in the event since 2001, when it was held at Penn State.
Non-conference matches against Clarion, Rutgers, Lehigh, Old Dominion and Liberty are scattered around the usual ACC matches against North Carolina, NC State, Maryland, Duke and Virginia. The 2011 ACC Championships will be held at UVa and the National Tournament will be held in Philadelphia.
“We have our work cut out for us,” Dresser said. “This is the toughest schedule this coaching staff has put together and it’s exactly what we need at this time. To open up with Iowa State is something exciting and getting to compete at the National Duals will definitely get us going for 2011.”
Tech is slated to return all 10 starters, plus several starters from 2008-09 who redshirted or were hurt last year.
