Tech wraps up regular season at No. 20 Old Dominion
Monarchs feature trio of top-10 wrestlers
BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech wrestling squad will conclude its regular season Thursday night against No. 20 Old Dominion at the Ted Constant Center. It’ll be a battle of conference dual meet champions as the Hokies (5-0 in ACC) and Monarchs (5-0 CAA) both captured their respective crowns.
Virginia Tech steamrolled through a pair of matches last Sunday, beating NC State 50-0 before downing Duke 28-15 with several backups wrestling. Tech dominated the Wolfpack 50-0 in the first meet of the doubleheader, for the school’s largest margin of victory since a 56-0 drubbing of Gardner-Webb in 2000. The Hokies won all 10 matches, five via pins and two by way of forfeits. With several starters resting in the second match, the Hokies still won six matches with three pins to move to 5-0 in the ACC and claim the conference’s dual meet championship. Jarrod Garnett picked up another two wins to run his record to 35-4. He is already tied for fifth place in single-season wins with 35 and will continue to move up that chart quickly and possibly break the record of 43 set by John Dattalo in 1996-97. D.J. Bruce picked up a pair of pins and Chris Diaz beat No. 18 Joe Caramanica of NC State en route to ACC Wrestler of the Week honors.
Old Dominion will enter the match 15-6 overall after beating Rider last weekend. The Monarchs are led by a trio of top-10 wrestlers in James Nicholson (6th at 125 pounds), Ryan Williams (6th at 141 pounds) and Chris Brown (10th at 165 pounds). ODU also has Jesse Strawn, who is ranked 16th at 197 pounds. Former Tech wrestler Eric Decker, who went 45-27 in two years, transferred and is the starter at 174 pounds for the Monarchs.
Tech is 9-21 all-time against ODU with the first meeting coming in 1966, a 20-14 win for the Hokies. ODU downed Tech last season 26-9 at Blacksburg.
