Hokies close out ACC season with two duals Sunday
NC State, Duke come calling at Cassell
BLACKSBURG – The 14th-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling squad (18-1, 3-0 ACC) will compete in its final two ACC dual meets this Sunday, hosting NC State and Duke at Cassell Coliseum. Admission is free. With a pair of wins, the Hokies will capture the conference’s dual meet title for the second time in five seasons (2004-05), but Tech has yet to win a tournament team title, where the conference champion is officially crowned.
Tech will open with NC State at 5 p.m., and will then host the Blue Devils after, at approximately 7 p.m. Live stats will be available on hokiesports.com and both matches will be shown for a fee online at ACCSelect.com.
NC State (4-12-1, 0-3 ACC) is a banged up team right now as several starters who are nationally ranked are just now returning. Regardless, the Pack is 4-11-1 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. When healthy, NC State features three ranked wrestlers - No. 18 Joe Caramanica at 141 pounds, No. 3 Darrion Caldwell at 149 pounds and No. 19 Kody Hamrah at 157 pounds. Caramanica and Caldwell will both be returning from injuries.
Both missed last weekend’s matches at North Carolina and against Ohio University, Caramanica with a knee problem and Caldwell with back spasms. Injuries have decimated the Wolfpack throughout the dual-match season. The team has won just one dual match since the NC State Duals on Jan. 3. The ‘Pack will wrestle at Virginia on Saturday.
A much-improved Duke squad enters Sunday’s action at 8-3 overall and 1-2 in the league. The Blue Devils will have a busy day as they will wrestle at Virginia at 1 p.m., and then travel a little over two hours for a match with the Hokies at 7 o’clock in Blacksburg.
At 184 pounds, John Barone has 102 wins, which ranks second all-time in Duke history. He needs four more to take over the top spot on the career charts. Konrad Dudziak is ranked fifth in the country at heavyweight, but isn’t in the probable lineup submitted by the Duke coaching staff.
After Sunday, Tech has just one dual meet remaining – a big contest at No. 18 Old Dominion on Thursday, Feb. 19 in Norfolk. The Hokies will host the ACC Championships on Saturday, March 7 at Cassell Coliseum.
