GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Pete Yates has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after helping the Hokies win two key matches to claim sole possession of first place in the league standings.
On Saturday, the 149-pound Yates beat Virginia's Peter Ferrara 9-3 to all but seal a 21-12 dual meet win over the Cavaliers. On Sunday, an early takedown proved the difference as Yates upset No. 15 Nick Stabile of North Carolina, 4-3, and move to 26-7 as a true freshman. The 13th-ranked Hokies went on to defeat the Tar Heels, 19-15.
With the two wins, Virginia Tech moved to 17-1 overall (2-0 ACC), breaking the school record for dual meet wins in a season. The previous record was 16, set in 2004-05.
The 20th-ranked Yates is one of 10 Hokie wrestlers that have 19 or more wins, led by true freshman Jarrod Garnett who sits at 32-4 on the season. His 32 wins already rank tied for ninth place in school history for wins in a single season.
