GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech 125-pound freshman Jarrod Garnett has been named ACC Wrestler of the Week after posting four dual wins and helping the Hokies to upset wins over 17th-ranked Michigan and sixth-ranked Central Michigan.
On Saturday, the 13th-ranked Garnett beat Binghamton’s Tyler Malberg 9-4 and then beat 14th-ranked Michael Watts of Michigan, 9-3. On Sunday, he beat Nebraska’s Andy Pokorny 8-2 before handing eighth-ranked Scotti Sentes of Central Michigan an 11-3 major decision loss. The true freshman from Newark, Del., is now 30-4 on the season. He was also named the Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week. It is the first time he has won either honor.
The Hokies (15-1) went 3-1 on the weekend road swing, losing only to fourth-ranked Nebraska. The 22-15 win over Michigan and the 19-12 win over Central Michigan marked the first two wins over ranked opponents in Virginia Tech program history.
