Hokies enjoy record setting season in 2017-18

Tech accumulates 23 wins, makes run to WNIT Championship Game

BLACKSBURG – Kenny Brooks’ second season at Virginia Tech produced many dramatic moments including several milestones that were eclipsed, both as a team and individually.

The Hokies won 23 games for the first time since the 2003-04 season and had the longest run in postseason history, winning five games on the way to a second place finish in the WNIT. After the Championship game, Taylor Emery and Regan Magarity each were named to the WNIT’s All-Tournament Team for their fantastic performances throughout the month of March.

The season began on Nov. 10 with a 99-32 victory over Wagner on Carilion Clinic Court, the program’s largest ever margin of victory. It was also the first time that junior college transfers Emery and Alexis Jean would suit up for the Hokies. Emery led all scorers with 20 points in the game on 7 for 11 shooting, a sign of things to come the rest of the season. She would go on to have a historic season for Tech, scoring the most points in a single season.

TECH HAD SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS REACH MILESTONES IN 2017-18

CHANETTE HICKS
Hicks, who set the single season record for steals her sophomore season, broke the program record for career steals on Dec. 12, when she recorded two, as the Hokies won 64-44. She also became the 25th woman in Tech history to score 1,000 points, eclipsing that milestone at Cassell Coliseum in the ACC opener against NC State.

TAYLOR EMERY
A junior college transfer, Emery started all 36 games she played during her junior season, leading the Hokies in scoring at 18.5 points per game. Emery earned Second Team All-ACC honors after a season where she shot 49 percent from the field, including 38 percent from 3-point range and 85 percent from the charity stripe.

In her first season at Tech, Emery already placed her name in the record book, setting the program record for points in a season with 667. Her 236 made field goals were also a record. In addition, she set the Virginia Tech record for points in a home ACC game when she scored 32 versus Virginia spearheading the comeback effort.

REGAN MAGARITY
Magarity became the 26th 1,000-point scorer in Tech history following Hicks’ accomplishment with a 17-point effort against Miami on Jan. 28.

The redshirt junior broke her own school record for rebounds in a season, set during her redshirt sophomore campaign, finishing with 357. She is now Tech’s all-time leader in career rebounds at 864. She recorded 16 double-doubles on the season, tied with All-American Myisha Hines-Allen of Louisville for most in the conference.

Magarity also climbed to sixth all-time at Tech in career blocks with 126.

KENDYL BROOKS
Brooks moved up to seventh all-time in 3-pointers with 118. Dating back to her freshman campaign and running into the 2017-18 season, Brooks set the program record with 21 consecutive games making at least one 3-point field goal.

AISHA SHEPPARD
The freshman guard eclipsed teammate Kendyl Brooks’ freshman record for 3-pointers in a season, knocking down 76, one shy of tying Vanessa Panousis’ mark for most in a single season at Tech.

TEAM PROGRAM RECORDS
For the second consecutive season, the Hokies broke the program record for points, scoring 2,673. The team also set program marks for field goals made (946), 3-point field goals made (295) and total rebounds (1,471).

COACH BROOKS A MODEL OF CONSISTENCY
After guiding the Hokies to one if the most successful seasons in program history and winning 23 contests, head coach Kenny Brooks recorded his 13th straight season of 20 or more wins dating back to his time at James Madison. In each of those seasons, Brooks’ teams have advanced to the postseason, including five NCAA appearances and eight trips to the WNIT.
