Tech's second-half comeback falls short, as Miami takes 82-78 victory

Rachel Camp paced the Hokies with 25 points, while Regan Magarity reached 1,000-point milestone after scoring 17 in the second half

BLACKSBURG – Erykah Davenport scored 22 points, as the Miami Hurricanes (15-7, 5-4 ACC) defeated Virginia Tech 82-78 at Carilion Clinic Court in an ACC game Sunday afternoon.

Tech fell to 14-8, 3-5 in the conference.

“I just thought the first half was so unconventional, with the foul trouble and Alexis Jean getting her nose broken,” Tech head coach Kenny Brooks said. “We were just trying to hold on and get to the locker room. I thought we did a good job. We cut it down and just ran out of steam. Credit to our kids. They did a really good job in the second half just being tough mentally and physically and didn’t allow Miami to just overpower them. We gave ourselves a chance to win at the end.”

Miami held a 17-point advantage at the break, its largest lead of the game, before the Hokies mounted their comeback.

Rachel Camp led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor. The redshirt junior, who has been handling point guard responsibilities, took advantage of her speed and attacked the middle of the floor Sunday, leading to seven free-throw attempts.

Chanette Hicks added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench, and Taylor Emery recorded 14 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Regan Magarity, who was forced to spend significant time on the bench in the first half because of foul trouble, poured in 17 points in the second half, which included four 3-point field goals to chip into the Hurricanes’ advantage.

A Camp field goal cut the lead to just two points with 35 ticks left on the clock, but that was as close as the Hokies would come, as Miami forced a turnover and converted six straight free throws down the stretch to win its 13^th straight in the series.
