BLACKSBURG – The No. 19/20 Virginia Tech women’s basketball team rolled past Delaware State, 88-48 on Friday night at Cassell Coliseum. With the win Tech improved to 13-0 on the season, marking the second best start in program history.
All 10 Hokies that appeared in the game scored with Chanette Hicks and Samantha Hill lead the way with 14 points. Hicks also added seven assists and five steals. Sidney Cook and Regan Magarity each tallied double-doubles. Cook recorded 10 points, 14 boards while Magarity notched 10 points and 11 rebounds. Vanessa Panousis added 12 points, connecting on four from outside the arc while Kaela Kinder rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
“Good win,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “I thought the kids did a good job. We started off a little bit sluggish, but Chanette played really well getting some baskets and got some baskets for other people. Vanessa shot the ball well early. Regan, I think is underrated in her defense, but she really anchors it back there. Sami Hill did a really good job tonight just getting it going. She’s like my swiss army knife out there; she does so many things for us. Really proud of our kids to finish out 13-0.”
The Hokies got off to a slow start in the opening quarter, holding a three-point, 11-8 lead just past the midway mark. Virginia Tech answered with a 21-4 run that spanned into the second frame to go on top 32-12 with 8:15 on the clock. The Hokies closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 52-21 lead into the break.
Tech scored 52 points in the first half, marking the most points scored in the opening 20 minutes since the Hokies dropped in 53 versus High Point in 2007.
Virginia Tech pushed its lead in the second half, taking the largest at 5:02 in the fourth, up 86-40. Delaware State closed out the game, outscoring Tech 8-2.
Tech forced 22 turnovers for 36 points and led on the glass 48-38. The Hokies shot 44.7 percent from the field, including a 42.3 percent clip from outside.
Najai Pollard led the Hornets with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Ivana Negorn added 10.
The Hokies will open the ACC slate on Monday, Jan. 2 against North Carolina. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
