Magarity, Cook tally double-doubles in win

BLACKSBURG – The 25th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s basketball team cruised past Central Connecticut State, 81-47, on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Cassell Coliseum.
Sidney Cook recorded her third double-double in the past four games, tallying 17 points and 10 boards. Regan Magarity had her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 15 boards. Chanette Hicks added 16 points while handing out four assists and grabbing five steals, and Vanessa Panousis posted 12 points and four assists.
“It was a good win for us,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “We got some great performances from some kids. I thought Regan and Sid were really good. I thought Chanette made the right play throughout the night. It was a good effort; we’ll take it. At this time of year the kids are really spent, their minds are on their academics with exams coming up, so this was a good win for us, to get it underneath our belt.”
Tech jumped out to the early lead, opening the game on a 13-0 run before the Blue Devils were able to get on the board from the charity line with 3:14 to go in the first quarter. The Hokies held the 19-7 lead at the quarter break.
CCSU got it down to single digits several times during the second frame, and were within nine (27-18) with just over four minutes to go before the Hokies answered with an 11-0 run to push the margin to 20. Tech closed out the half, taking a 45-23 lead into the locker room after freshman Kaela Kinder drained the first 3-pointer of her career at the buzzer.
In the third quarter the two teams kept it close offensively, with the Hokies outscoring the Blue Devils just 13-12. Tech went to work in the final frame, closing out the final 10 minutes with a 23-12 advantage.
Tech held a 50-31 advantage on the boards, including 15 on the offensive side for 13 points. The Hokies also forced 16 turnovers for 22 points.
Aleah Epps led the Blue Devils (1-7) with 16 points, four assists and three steals. Taylor Goode chipped in 13 points and Cebria Outlow grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Dec. 11 when Tech hosts Bowling Green in a 3:30 p.m. game at Cassell Coliseum. It is the second part of a double-header with the Virginia Tech men’s team who plays Ole Miss at noon.
