LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After trailing 31-18 at halftime, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team used a strong second half to cut the game to three early in the fourth quarter, but Louisville was able to hold on to secure the win 56-45 on Thursday evening at the KFC Yum! Center.
The Hokies fall to 13-2 and 1-1 in the ACC. Louisville improves to 11-5, 3-0 in the league.
“It was a very hard-fought game on the road against a good team. I’m really proud of the way the girls responded in the second half but we just made too many mistakes on the defensive boards and turned the ball over too much to give us the right chance to win,” head coach Dennis Wolff said.
Hannah Young led Virginia Tech with 16 points, shooting 4-of-6 from outside the arc. Vanessa Panousis added nine points. Chanette Hicks recorded eight rebounds, six points, six assists and four steals while Taijah Campbell also had six points and eight boards.
The Hokies and Cardinals kept it close in the opening quarter with neither team leading by more than four. Louisville was up by three heading into the final minute, but a 3-pointer from Young tied it up 13-13 at the end. In the second quarter, Louisville opened with a 13-2 run to push ahead 26-15. The Hokies cut it down to 10, but the Cardinals ultimately took a 13-point, 31-18 lead into the break.
Tech came out firing in the third quarter, opening with an 11-2 run to cut the Louisville lead to 33-27 off a pair of free throws from Panousis. Louisville connect on a 3-pointer to push the lead back to nine, but the Hokies scored the final four points of the quarter to close it to 36-31 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Louisville used eight unanswered points in the fourth quarter to put some distance in the scoring, going on top 46-35 with 5:25 remaining. The Hokies were down by nine heading into the final 1:30, but the Cardinals went 5-of-6 from the line to help hold on for the win.
Myisha Hines-Allen led Louisville with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Briahanna Jackson added 13 points and Asia Durr tallied 10.
The Hokies shot 37.2 percent from the field, including 37.5 percent from long range. Tech held the Cardinals to 34.5 percent from the field and just 12.5 from outside. Virginia Tech hit 70 percent from the line, but had just 10 shots from the stripe while Louisville was 16-of-20.
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 10 in a 2 p.m. game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
