BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team held Boston College to just eight points in the second half as the Hokies powered past the Eagles on Sunday afternoon, 58-33 to win the ACC opener for both teams.
Tech, trailing Boston College 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, outscored the Eagles 34-12 over the second and third to take a 47-27 lead into the fourth quarter. The Hokies defense only allowed four Boston College free throws during the 17:44 stretch that lasted from 2:52 in the second quarter until 5:08 remaining in the fourth.
“Really proud of the team,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “This has been a really enjoyable group to coach. They are totally locked in and I sensed it yesterday that we were almost a little bit too amped up to play our first ACC game. They stayed with the game-plan and the team defense was terrific. I thought Hannah [Young], in particular, did a tremendous job on their leading scorer. I’m not sure she had a clean look other than when we were pressing them. Proud of the kids and it’s a good way to start league play.”
With the win the Hokies improve to 13-1 on the season and 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play while the Eagles fall to 11-2, 0-1. It was the first ACC-opening win for the Hokies since the 2012-13 season, a victory over Wake Forest.
Hannah Young had a game-high 13 points and four steals to lead the Hokies. Regan Magarity had 10 rebounds, seven points and a career-high five steals. Chanette Hicks scored 11 points to go along with four assists and three steals while Vanessa Panousis added 10 points and five assists.
The Hokies had 16 steals and forced 24 Boston College turnovers as they outscored the Eagles 18-9 in points off turnovers. The defense also limited Boston College to just 20.0 percent (9-of-45) while Tech shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the floor.
After a pair of Boston College free throws pushed the Eagles lead to 17-13, the Hokies went on a 12-0 run at the beginning of the second quarter that started with a Taijah Campbell layup and was followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Young and Panousis.
Coming out of halftime, Tech outscored Boston College 14-2 as the Hokies only allowed two free throws during the quarter. The Eagles went 0-of-12 shooting in the frame and the Hokies led by at least 20 points for the remainder of the game.
The Hokies will travel to Louisville for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Thursday evening.
