BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team wrapped up the non-conference slate with a 12-1 record to match the second best start in program history as the Hokies beat Furman on Wednesday afternoon, 59-30.
The best start by a Virginia Tech team was an 18-1 start during the 1998-99 season. Tech also opened 2003-04 and 2005-06 with 12-1 marks. With the loss, Furman fell to 6-7 on the year.
“I thought we were terrific defensively,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “We were really locked in right from the start. Furman is a team that has played well and played BCS schools and they are scoring at a high rate. Our team really guarded the heck out of them.”
The Hokies pulled away early in the second quarter as a Vanessa Panousis 3-pointer sparked a 12-0 run. Six different Tech players scored during the quarter as the Hokies ultimately outscored the Paladins 22-5 to take a commanding 38-12 lead at halftime. Furman never got closer than 23 the rest of the way.
Tech played stifling defense all afternoon, as the Paladins were only able to shoot 19.0 percent from the floor and 22.2 percent from 3-point range. The Hokies forced 17 turnovers and were able to turn them into a 17-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Hannah Young was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor, all 3-pointers, as she had a game-high 12 points. Young was one of three Hokies to score in double-figures as Chanette Hicks had 10 points and four assists while Rachel Camp had 10 points and four rebounds. Tajiah Campbell also added eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Virginia Tech started the game on a 10-2 run that included 3-pointers from Young and Magarity. The Hokies lead grew to 14-4 before the Paladins cut it to 16-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hokies shot 53.8 percent in the first half while limiting Furman to just 17.9 percent (5-of-28) from the floor. The Hokies went 5-of-13 from 3-point range and outrebounded the Paladins 21-15. The Hokies held a 12-0 advantage in points off turnovers and a 14-4 edge in points in the paint.
Virginia Tech will open ACC play on Saturday at 2 p.m. as they host Boston College.
